WINCHENDON – Robert R. Russell, 84, of 23 Lincoln Avenue, died peacefully Wednesday morning, January 20th in Heywood Hospital, Gardner.

He was born in Winchendon on December 4, 1931, son of the late Robert and Freda (Tatro) Russell and graduated from Murdock High School in 1950.

Following his high school graduation, Bob proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.  After his discharge, he worked for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette for 17 years as a printer.  He later received his teaching certificate from Worcester Vocational School and became an instructor for ten years at Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School in Westminster.  Following his retirement, he maintained a home printing business.

Bob was a member Eugene M. Connor American Legion Post #193 and Lt. Frederick Wilder White Post 2158 VFW.  He was a founding member of the Senior Golf League at the Winchendon School.  A proficient bowler, Bob bowled for many years in several area bowling leagues.  He was also a founding member of the former Judo Team at the Clark Memorial, where he also played basketball in several basketball leagues from his youth in to his senior years.

He leaves his wife of 63 years, Betty L. (Catanese) Russell; a sister, Alice McQueston of Gardner as well as nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Russell, who died in 1988 and two sisters, Rachel Raymond and Roberta Million.

Military funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 27th at 11 A.M. in Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street.  There are no calling hours.
