Jane Greenwood Heywood Coleman

GARDNER – Jane Greenwood Heywood Coleman, 99, of Gardner, passed away peacefully at home on November 30, 2019 after a long illness.  She was born in Gardner on June 27, 1920, daughter of the late Harold E. Greenwood and Ruth (French) Greenwood, and lived most of her life in Gardner.

Jane graduated from Gardner High School, class of 1938, and then attended both Mount Holyoke College and Vesper George School of Art in Boston.  In 1941 she married Henry E. (Pete) Heywood and they had three children.  After Pete’s passing, she married a childhood friend, Gould (Bud) Coleman, when they were both seventy-six years of age.  She and Bud enjoyed twenty years together.

Jane lived a very active life style and loved the outdoors.  At 80 years of age, she climbed Mt. Monadnock and enjoyed her last season of skiing.  She enjoyed many years of tennis, skiing, camping, gardening, flower arranging and traveling, both domestically and abroad.  She also enjoyed entertaining, and was regarded as an excellent cook and gracious hostess.

She was active in the Unitarian Church her entire life, as well as in the Heywood Hospital Aid Association, the Gardner Theatre Guild, Gardner Boat Club, Chowder Club and various bridge clubs.  In her younger years, she was an interior decorator for developer Leo LaChance, and occasionally worked for both Betty’s Flower Shop and Valley Florists.  She was perhaps best known for being an accomplished watercolor artist, and exhibited a number of paintings several years ago at the Heywood Library.

She leaves her daughters Karen Greenlaw of Lynchburg, VA and Jennifer Heywood of Gardner, MA; her son Jeffrey Heywood of Golden, CO; her brother Robert T. Greenwood of Boynton Beach, FL; 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her husbands and by her brother Harold E. (Greenie) Greenwood. Jr.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 2, 2020 at 12 Noon in Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, Winchendon with the Rev. Elea Kemler officiating.

A calling hour will precede the service Thursday from 11 AM to Noon in the funeral home.
