GARDNER – Wilfred J. “Sonny”Martin, 77, of 59 Eastwood Circle, died Friday morning, January 3, 2020 in Gardner Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
He was born in Gardner on April 14, 1942, son of the late Joseph Wilfred and Toini (Hakkinen) Martin and lived in Winchendon for most of his life. Sonny was a 1960 graduate of Murdock High School.
Sonny worked for many years as a crane rigger at General Electric until his retirement. He previously worked as a taxi driver, and worked at Heywood Wakefield Furniture Company and National Seat. He was a former member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and was a former member of Finance Board and Board of Public Works for the Town of Winchendon. A true union man, he believed in buying American. Sonny loved spending time with his grandchildren, spending time at his parent’s camp in Royalston working on cars and had enjoyed ice racing in his younger years. A man of wit, Sonny enjoyed playing pranks on friends and family and was very passionate about food
His wife, Nancy C. (Patterson) Martin, died in 2015. He leaves three children, Catherine M. Wheeler and her husband Richard of Barre, Susan A. Sawyer and her husband Nathan R. of Hubbardston and Peter M. Martin and his fiancé Janet Hathcock of NH; two brothers, Ralph and Ronald Martin of Winchendon; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at 11 A.M. in St. Vincent de Paul Church, 1 Forest Street, Baldwinville. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in the spring.
