Gardner-Rodney Lee Wilbur, 73, died Friday, June 30, 2023, at UMass Memorial Hospital after an illness.
He leaves his wife Victoria A. (Penzone) Wilbur; four children, Jacob Rodney Wilbur of Fitchburg, Jesse Ian Wilbur of Wareham, Jewels Marie Meskauskas of Gardner, and Rene’ Michelle Snow and her husband James of Fitchburg; six grandchildren, Sarah Mears, Jacob Rodney Wilbur, Jr, Thomas Wilbur, Ebony Marie Wilbur, Serenity Lee Snow, and Nathaniel Jaymz Snow; four great-grandchildren, Catalyna Vera, Adonis, Dante, and Serephina; one brother, Steven Wilbur and his wife Janice of Fitchburg, and several nieces and nephews.
Rod was born in Fitchburg on December 30, 1949, a son of the late Leon and Mildred (Rajala) Wilbur. He was a graduate of Fitchburg High School where he was a Class Officer in 1968, and played Varsity Basketball, ran cross-country and outdoor track. Rodney also attended Fitchburg State College for 2 years; before he served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. He worked as a mechanical engineer for Sealed Air Corp. for many years.
He was an avid reader, and a member of the Peoples Congregational Church in South Ashburnham. Rodney ws a big Boston sports fan, especially the Red Sox and Celtics
A graveside service with military honors will be held on July 12, 2023 at 2:00pm at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon, MA 01475.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his honor to the Montachusett Veterans Outreach, 268 Central Street, Gardner, MA 01440.
