Robert W. D'Angelo

December 2, 1957 — May 14, 2021

Robert W. D’Angelo, 63, of Gardner died peacefully Friday, May 14, 2021 in Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston after putting up an extraordinary 9-year fight against cancer.

He was born in Boston on December 2, 1957, son of the late Robert W. and Jackie (Beeler) D’Angelo.

He worked for 20 years at Polaroid before his retirement. He leaves his wife of 32 years, Carolyn (McPhee) D’Angelo of Gardner, two children, Katherine D’Angelo and her longtime partner Kevin Kiley of Gardner, and Crista Newcomb and her husband Gary of Burlington, 15 nieces and nephews, and 22 great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Robin D’Angelo and Jamie Pandolfo.

Bob could be defined as a true Renaissance man, a person with many talents and areas of knowledge. His hobbies ranged from playing the guitar with his band City Limits in the 70’s, to studying quantum physics and string theory in his spare time. Though he didn’t pursue higher education, he was an incredible learner and constantly sought to further his knowledge on every topic he could. Many reading this will recall sitting with Bob, having him pick out any old object in the room and explaining to you how it works.

He was the man who always had a story. Did you know he played pool with Joe Perry of Aerosmith? That he once set out to climb Mount Washington in shorts and a t-shirt, not realizing what the weather would look like at 6,200 feet? He’d tell you about it!

Bob spent his younger days as an avid outdoorsman, skiing, hiking, fishing and camping across New England. The joy of catching a fish always put a smile on his face, no matter the size. He brought that love of the outdoors to his children, taking his family camping regularly throughout Maine and eventually purchasing a camp where they spent many family vacations. In 2009 he and Carolyn made an impromptu decision to purchase and restore a 26’ Venture sailboat with the help of his brother-in-law, Don. That spur of the moment purchase ultimately brought some of the greatest memories Bob ever had, learning to sail and taking adventures in Penobscot Bay as often as he could.

In his later years, he pursued more creative ventures such as wood turning, jewelry and pen making. Above all else, Bob enjoyed spending time with his family and his many dogs.

32 years my husband, 34 my best friend

Eternity in a flash all our dreams come to an end

A sail filled with wind, boots on a path

Memories to last, no regrets, many laughs

Music in life brings you to a place of no pain

Take with you my love until we meet again

Carolyn D’Angelo
