Peter J. Kraniak

Peter J. Kraniak May 16, 1941 – April 19, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Peter J. Kraniak, 83, a beloved son, brother, uncle, teacher, veteran, and friend. Peter passed away on April 19, 2025.

Born in Rockville Centre, NY, on May 16, 1941, Peter was raised in Hempstead, New York. He attended Our Lady of Loretto Catholic School and Chaminade Catholic High School. Peter earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Johnson State College in Vermont and a Master of Education from Fitchburg State College.

In 1964, Peter proudly enlisted in the New York Army National Guard, serving with the 42nd Infantry Division and attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. His passion for education began early, and in 1965, he started his career in the Brentwood Public School system. In 1970, Peter and his mother moved to Royalston, Massachusetts, where he continued his work with the Winchendon Public School system, retiring after 38 years in 2003. He was a dedicated class advisor for several Senior Promenade classes and spent 42 years as a ticket collector for local sporting events with the Sports Boosters.

Peter’s generosity extended beyond his professional life—he welcomed international students into his home, particularly those attending The Winchendon School on soccer scholarships. He affectionately called them his “boys,” and they considered him their American father. Many of these young men were from Poland and Brazil, and Peter formed lasting bonds with them, frequently traveling to both countries.

In addition to his teaching and family, Peter was deeply involved in local history. He proudly served as President of the Royalston Historical Society for over 30 years and at times was Chairman of the Historical District Board. In 2022, Peter received an Official Citation from the State Senate of Massachusetts to recognize the beautification, renovations, and long-standing work as President of the Royalston Historical Society.

Peter’s passion for Christmas was evident; he loved the season and beautifully decorated his house, entertaining many friends throughout the holiday! He was also a lover of animals, rescuing multiple Pugs during his lifetime and providing them with the best care and his undying love. Not only did Peter love his fur-babies, but he also loved his Amazon parrot, Sidney.

Peter is survived by his loving sister, Joan F. Crotty of Stuarts Draft, VA, ; nephews Richard C. Crotty (Katrina) of Whispering Pines, NC, and Warren T. Crotty (Nancy) of St. Peters, MO; nieces Kathleen Clark (Eric) of Newport, NC, and Susan Howe (Richard) of Jupiter, FL; as well as ten grandnieces and nephews, six great-grandnieces and nephews, numerous cousins and Godchildren that meant the world to him. His family extends heartfelt thanks to Heidi and David Herr of Royalston for their years of friendship and care, along with his countless friends in the communities of Royalston and Winchendon.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents, James and Helen Kraniak, his brother-in-law, LTC (ret) Richard E. Crotty, and many other loved ones.

A private burial will take place, followed by a Celebration of Life Mass at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peter’s memory to:
