Mary Kate Whalen Martin

Ashburnham- Mary Kate Martin, 83, was promoted to Glory on Saturday, April 30, 2022. 

She was the devoted wife of the late Henry Hoover Martin, who died in 1979. 

She leaves her son, Bruce of Rockville Center, NY; her daughter, Kimberly Levesque and her husband John of Ashburnham; one granddaughter, Mary Regan and her fiance, Matthew Morrow of State College, PA; two grandsons, Jack Levesque of Ashburnham and Johnathan Levesque, his fiancè , Liara Dean, and their daughter Anabela Kimberly of Fitchburg; five living brothers and sisters, Heman Whalen of St. John's, Newfoundland, Rowena Bibee of TN, Cyril King, Wesley King, and Daphne Stacey all of Alberta, Canada; one sister-in-law, Lillian Collis of Newfoundland, Canada; and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends and colleagues.

She is predeceased by eight brothers and sisters, Cecil, Silas, Annie, Doris, Nina, Leslie, Marjorie, George; dear aunt and uncle S. Wesley and Annie (Benson) Price, cousins Wesley and Phyllis Price and Lillian (Price) and Robert Forsey.

Mary Kate was born in Caplin Cove, Newfoundland, Canada on May 19, 1938, a daughter of the late Selby and Rebecca Jane (Price) Whalen. She was a 1957 graduate of Chelsea High School. She graduated from Mount Wachusett Community College in 1981 and from Fitchburg State University in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in Human Services. She worked as a social worker in Fitchburg and Leominster in the Department of Social Services for 28 years. 

She was lovingly known as Nan and Sarge. She was an active and devoted member of the People’s Congregational Church in South Ashburnham. She was a deacon at the church, active in bible studies, taught Sunday school and was a supporter of overseas missions. 

She was the leader of the "Corey Hill Chapel" and was on the Board of Directors for the HOPE Armenia Missions. 

She enjoyed baking, cooking, classical music, reading and playing scrabble. She loved the Red Sox, the Patriots, and the Bruins. In her lifetime she touched many lives through her work, at church and in life itself. She was truly devoted to her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends.   

Kate’s family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, the staff of Alliance Baldwinville and the Beacon Hospice in Leominster for the exceptional care given to her. 

Her funeral will be held on Friday, May 6, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. in the People’s Congregational Church, 56 Main Street, Ashburnham, MA 01430. 

Burial will follow in the New Cemetery, Nims Road, Ashburnham, MA. 

Calling Hours will be on Thursday, May 5, 2022 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Stone Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon, MA 01475,

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Mary Kate’s name to either the HOPE Armenian Missions or Massachusetts Wonderfund.
