Gardner, MA

Ernest E. Amidon Sr., of Gardner, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 13th, 2024, at the age of 95. Born on June 21st, 1929, Ernest was the son of the late Edward and Eva (Hines) Amidon. He is now reunited with his brothers, the late Richard and Raymond Amidon, as well as his beloved children; his late stepdaughter Micheline Correll, and his biological children, the late Susan Ledgard and Seth Amidon. Ernest is survived by his devoted wife, Linda M. Jacobsen Amidon, with whom he shared 42 years—more than half their lives—of love and companionship. He leaves behind his cherished children, Ernest (Timmy) Amidon Jr., Lee Amidon, and Jane Lefrancois, along with his two wonderful stepchildren, Jean Pierre Lauture and Renee Aldrich. He was the proud grandfather to 12 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, and the great-grandfather to 16 great-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren. Ernest's large family was his greatest joy, and his love for them knew no bounds.

Ernest was born in Gardner, raised in Baldwinville, Massachusetts, attending elementary school in Templeton before graduating from Templeton High School in 1947. Shortly after graduation, he began a remarkable journey of service by joining the Army Air Corps in August 1947. His basic training was completed at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, followed by specialized training at Randolph Field. There he volunteered for a groundbreaking program under Wernher von Braun, the pioneering aerospace engineer who helped shape America's space exploration. His intellectual curiosity and passion for learning led him to pursue dental training, eventually serving as a military dental assistant in Greenland, and also during the Korean War. Ernest proudly achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged from the military, leaving a legacy of dedication to his country. Upon his honorable discharge from the military in 1951, Ernest Amidon continued his commitment to service by joining the American Legion, an organization dedicated to enhancing the well-being of America’s veterans, their families, the military, and communities. For 73 years, until his passing, Ernest was an active and devoted member of the American Legion Post 373 in Baldwinville, MA, where he found a brotherhood rooted in mutual helpfulness. His leadership and dedication to the cause led him to hold many significant positions within the organization, including the esteemed role of Commander. In this capacity, Ernest organized events and initiatives to support fellow veterans and their families, ensuring they received the necessary resources and care. He spearheaded local efforts to honor veterans on Memorial and Veterans Days, organized community outreach programs, and supported fundraising drives for veteran services. His work within the Legion was not only a reflection of his deep sense of duty, but also of his genuine belief in the power of community and camaraderie. His legacy of service will be remembered fondly by all who had the honor of serving alongside him.

To his family and those fortunate enough to know him, Ernest was much more than his achievements and titles. He was the heart and soul of his family, a man whose love and guidance shaped those around him. It was nothing short of a blessing to be loved by Ernest. As a father and stepfather, he was not only nurturing but also incredibly selfless, embracing his stepchildren with the same unwavering love he gave his own. He lived a life of quiet strength, always putting the needs of others before his own.

A lover of nature, Ernest found his peace in the outdoors, particularly in his garden. He had a special connection to the earth, tending to his plants with care and patience. His family fondly remembers his tradition of picking apples from the tree in his yard each Thanksgiving and baking a homemade apple pie — a symbol of his love and generosity.

Ernest was also a captivating storyteller, sharing tales from his rich life experiences, often with humor and wisdom. His stories, filled with adventure and insight, left lasting impressions on everyone who heard them. Even in his later years, he maintained a thirst for knowledge and a curiosity about the world, always eager to learn something new.

Ernest was a man of traditional values in an age of technology; he preferred the personal touch of handwritten letters, filled with thoughtfulness and care. These letters, like the man himself, were heartfelt and sincere, serving as a lasting reminder of his love and dedication.

Ernest's legacy is one of love, resilience, and the importance of family. His kindness, generosity, and sense of humor will live on in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know him. His memory will forever be cherished, and his family will carry his values forward, honoring his life by continuing the traditions and lessons he passed down.

Though he is no longer with us, Ernest's spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
