WINCHENDON – Elizabeth L. “Betty” Brehio, 99, of Winchendon, died peacefully Saturday, October 29, 2022 in Alliance Health at Baldwinville, with her family at her side.

She was born in Winchendon on September 11, 1923, daughter of the late John and Rose (Bastille) Brehio and was a lifelong resident of Winchendon.

Betty leaves 17 nieces and nephews, most of whom she kept in touch with, and many grand and great grand nephews and nieces.  She was preceded in death by four sisters, Rita White, Anita Ladeau, Lucille Kaiser and Norma Kidder and two brothers, John Brehio and Cyril Brehio.

Betty graduated from Murdock High School with the Class of 1941, which at the time, was the largest to graduate with 81 members.  She played basketball while there, was a commencement usher and wrote the words to her class song to the melody of Finlandia.

As an alumnus, Betty served as treasurer of the Alumni Association, helping many plan their reunions.  She stayed in touch with her own classmates, who for many years gathered together for lunch and to reminisce.

Soon after graduation, Betty was employed at the local electric company, where she worked through many of its mergers.  She retired from New England Power Service Company in Westborough after 45 years of employment.  Betty belonged to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Winchendon Historical Society, Friends of Old Murdock and the former Winchendon Council of Churches.  She was a founding member of WGBH and enjoyed its many programs.  She rarely missed watching Jeopardy.

Betty enjoyed good humor, good music and musicians, trips to Cranes Beach and Foxwoods.  She enjoyed playing volleyball at the Clark Memorial for many years.  She also traveled to many states and countries.  Her favorite charities were Doctors Without Borders, the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul Society.

The family wishes to thank Dr. David N. Havlin for his years of care as well as the staff of Broadview Assisted Living, Alliance Health at Baldwinville and Care Central VNA and Hospice.
