Winchendon

Adelard Joseph "Del" Vaine, born on March 28, 1925, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2026, at the age of 101. He was the son of Edward and Florence (Varieur) Vaine.

Del shared a marriage of 75 years with the love of his life, Lorraine, who predeceased him in 2025. Together, they created a family: four children, Susan Martin-Scott, Richard Vaine and his wife Gail, David Vaine and his wife Lynn, and Nancy Monette and her husband Tracy. Del was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren: Shawn Martin, Chad Martin, Michael Vaine, Evan Vaine, Bryan Vaine, Jennifer Tyros, Jason Monette, Jessica Monette, and Josh Monette, as well as a great-grandfather to twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Eddie and Andre Vaine, while his brother Roland predeceased him.

A patriot, Del served in the US Navy aboard several aircraft carriers, the USS Philippine Sea and the USS Valley Forge, during WWII and the Korean War. After his military service, he embarked on a career as a machinist with General Box Co. and later Goodspeed Machine Co. Following his retirement, he worked part-time at Fisher Auto Parts.

Del enjoyed outdoor activities with Lorraine, including working in the yard, cross-country skiing, and biking on rail trails from Winchendon to Cape Cod, riding until the age of 92. His skills in carpentry and electrical work were shared generously with his children, offering his expertise on various projects.

He and Lorraine delighted in traveling, visiting California, Alaska, Hawaii, Nova Scotia, Arizona, and Florida. In May 2024, Del was honored with the Boston Post Cane Award as the oldest resident of Winchendon.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Del’s devoted caregivers: Janie Anderson, Margie Kuchta, Kelsey Brooks, Alison Della Monica, Brandy Anderson, Roxanne Tenny, and the staff at Central VNA & Hospice, Inc. Their support allowed Del to remain in the home he built in 1950.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winchendon Fire Department and Ambulance Service, always ready to lend a helping hand. We express our gratitude for their dedication.

Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, Winchendon, Massachusetts, is handling the arrangements.
